Ubuntu. Linux For The Human Beings

29 08 2008

About a week ago, I was walking as always towards my Physics class. I was quite bored, as I was starting to get tired, it was friday, and the only “friggin’” thing I actually wanted to do, was to go to my girlfriends house, because we were going out with some friends. I had to go to swim after that class, so it was quite a long run. I kept walking towards the building, when something caught my eyes. I saw an Ubuntu logo.

I thought it was just my imagination, but I turned back only to see if I had actually seen that. To my surprise, there was a huge Ubuntu logo in the Asociations Stand. Now, in a university where everywhere you go, you find Windows, more Windows, Windows plans, Windows computers and Windows labs, this is amazing.

I was already late, but I couldn’t help stopping. “I’m just stopping by” I thought. I actually wasn’t planning anything, I was only going to have a look, and I would go to my class. The were around 4 people in, with lots of laptops. I guessed they were installing Ubuntu in them. I already knew how to do it myself, I installed it plenty of times before. But not in my new computer. They told that they were actually doing everything. I thought about it for a moment, and I decided to leave my computer so they did the dirty work.

But just when I was about to do it, this guy tells me “Uhhm I’m sorry but I have class at one o’clock, you can leave it but I won’t be here”. It didn’t sound good enough, so I decided I wouldn’t leave my poor little laptop there. Instead of that, they gave me a disc and a sticker which I pasted in my car. Inside the case, there was a brand new, shiny Ubuntu 8.04 disc. I was simply flattered. I couldn’t wait to install it. I even forgot I had a class… When I realized I was late, I rushed to my classroom. I was lucky, as the teacher wasn’t there.

I got to my house early that day. I went to pick my girlfriend, we ate, and the we went with our friends. As soon as I got to my house, I started the System Rescue CD with GParted, and opened up a block for Ubuntu with ext3 and a Swap space. It was painfully slow, I remembered the first time I did this to install a Ubuntu with a dual-boot. GParted move every single bit to the back of my disc, resized the NTFS partition with Windows, and created an Ext3 partition with my swap right at the front of my disc. It took about 4 hours to finish… It was that damn slow that I even forgot what hour it was. I left my computer doing its job while I was with my girlfriend. When I got home (Again…) I inserted the Ubuntu CD in my computer. It ran pretty fast, and the installation went on without problems. Actually it didn’t even took 20 minutes.

It booted with GRUB just like the last time. I didn’t realize that hell was about to emerge when I logged into the new system. Practically, no drivers where working. The nVidia chipset wasn’t working properly, my Wi-Fi module couldn’t connect, my webcam and microphone didn’t work, it was pretty ugly. So I decided I had to do something. All of what I had to do, will be published in my next post, which I hope will be here by tomorrow.

A Meaning for the Meaningless

19 08 2008

I’ve just read my first post in this blog. Honestly it was, QUITE crappy. I just started writing and writing, without a purpose. I just wanted a small introduction for my new blog, so I wrote anything that came across my mind.  So I guess I should actually write about what I want to do with this blog.

First of all, I want this to be a personal blog. There are lots of things that I had to do in the last few years that I could never find, anywhere, so I want to publish the solution to some problems I found. Also, I would like to publish “How-To” texts. Doing everything by yourself can teach you quite some things, and having a guide can be really helpful.

I absolutely love music. I have in mind one or two tutorials I want to write, which I’ll publish here. Actually, they are one of the main reasons I’m writing in this blog.

I like a lot the Tags and Categories system of WordPress. They are a very neat way of keeping a blog organized. I’ll be using them a lot, each post will have tags about the specific topic I’m writing, and I’ll use the categories to be able to manage everything as if I was writing in a book, where each category will be a new chapter. I’ll make this blog the first updateable book.

Also, I’d like to have a full log of what I do to this blog, so I’ll also have a category for the Blog’s changes, and ideas that pop up. I want to do this, because in previews blogs I’ve had, I’ve always ended with lots of meaningless posts without a decent place to be. I really want to have an organized blog. That’s one of the main reasons I chose WordPress.

I try to publish often. I really enjoy writing, also, I’m practicing my writing skills and english by doing it, so after all, this won’t be worthless. I guess I’ll just start writing, and then I’ll see what happens.

The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

11 08 2008

Ok, once again, I’m here, sitting in front of the computer, without even thinking what am I going to say. Just as the last time, I’m listening electronic music (Future Pop) writing in WordPress’ Interface. I really like it I must say, it excellent features, such as the Auto-Save, Tags, Categories, and so many other things.

After this small introduction, I’ll move on to the purpose of this blog.
I’ve had so many other blogs through my life. I beggan with a MSN Space which I really enjoyed. I used to write about computer mods I did, with photos of them. Then I switched to Blogger, because I wanted a better platform, which was full-featured.

I didn’t stayed for long though, Blogger’s main engine was optimized, and many things were lost, along with my posts about modding and my personal life. I reopened my blog, but it was obvious for me, that my blog was long gone.

I need to start again, but this time, I wanted something I really liked. Not a simple blog which could store my posts, I wanted, something with good graphics, with an aestethic look, which was quick to use, but it had good features.

That was, when I came across WordPress.

Since the very moment I saw it in action, I decided I wanted one. I started looking information, everywhere I could. I started experimenting with PHP in my Kurobox (A small Linux server)

I really loved it, but it was a huge problem to host it in my house, mainly because of bandwith problems. I finally decided it would be much better if I got an account directly at WordPress.com, so I got the account, and now I’m starting to write.

I’ll be honest, I don’t have a clear idea about what I want to write about. I guess I’ll just let the ideas get out of my mind, and see what happens.

Sure thing, I’ve blocked out now. I’m starting to check I have just written. I think I’m publishing this post, and I’ll come back later to keep on writing. I’ve got to think in all the stuff I want to write about.
